Partnership in global health

Simon Thomas travelled to Bahar Dar in Ethiopia in March 2019 with Jim Turner and James Berwin to meet with surgeons working at the university and government hospitals there. A fellowship and training program is now being developed for paediatric orthopaedic services in the region that serves a population of approximately 10 million.

Mr Thomas and his colleagues plan regular trips to develop local surgeons over the next 5-10 years.


New appointments Feb 2017

The expert paediatric physiotherapist Jo Lott has joined the team at Spire Bristol. We are delighted that she will be working with us there.

Hatt Health and Movement Clinic

We are pleased to recommend the physiotherapy services of the Hatt Health and Movement clinic to our familes in the east of the region. CURE Ethiopia updates


Simon Thomas and Guy Atherton have close links with the CURE Children's Hospital in Addis Ababa having first visited and worked there in 2014. Guy has since been back on a clubfoot Ponseti teaching program and Simon returned in March 2016 for a week training the country's resident orthopaedic surgeons and again in November 2017.








SDR in Bristol

March 2015




Bristol is leading the way in a surgical procedure known as SDR. This neurosurgical opeartion helps children with cerebral palsy improve their mobility. Guy Atherton and Anna Clarke are the Orthopaedic Leads in the SDR group & perform orthopaedic surgeries ('percs') when required.

Lewis Clarke's epic South Pole Challenge ends in success

January 18th 2014




This remarkable 16 year-old school boy from Bristol made it to the South Pole, the youngest person ever to cross-country ski the full 700 miles from the coast of Antarctica. BCOG were delighted to support Lewis by funding his specialist skis. Click on the picture to follow the link to his website and charity, the Prince's Trust, if you would like to.

American Academy 2015 International Symposium of Children's Orthopaedics


Simon Thomas was invited to this prestigious meeting in Florida in December as an Instructor. He taught specialist children's orthopaedic surgeons from all over the world on subjects including Perthes disease, hip dysplasia, limb deformity and cerebral palsy.
